Black Hills Estate Winery
Profile
Black Hills Estate Winery vineyards have some of the country’s most favorable grape growing conditions, resulting in exceptional terroir. Located on the famed Black Sage Road, 13 kilometers north of Osoyoos, BC and 10 kilometers south of Oliver, BC. This places Black Hills Estate in the Okanagan Valley appellation, centered in the middle of Canada’s only official desert. The resulting microclimate leaves us with one of the country’s hottest, driest, and sunniest sites. In fact, with our northern latitude, we have more sunlight hours than Napa Valley in the key growing months of June through August.
The vineyards’ west-facing slope aspect and deep desert sand experience exceptional diurnal temperature variation, providing daytime heat that fully ripens our grapes followed by cool nights that allow acid retention. The result? Intensely flavourful grapes! Make sure to experience the Ipso Facto blend!
Black Hills Winery’s careful irrigation techniques and thoughtfully focused viticulture practices provide ideal growing conditions for the Bordeaux and Rhone varietals we nurture. We are so terroir-centric that our winegrower lives right in the middle of our vineyard. He quite literally eats, sleeps, and breathes our grapes!
Black Hills Estate Winery vineyard sites have been recognized as having some of the best terroirs in Canada. Our microclimate is located on Black Sage Road, which provides us one of Canada’s hottest, driest, and sunniest sites. The southwest-facing aspect and moderate slope combined with our deep desert sand yield intensely flavourful and complex grapes.
As stewards of this incredible piece of agricultural land, we endeavor to harness the full potential of the land to cultivate the best possible fruit.
The 2018 Ipso Facto is a blend comprised of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Syrah from the Black Sage Bench appellation. The nose has ripe aromas of black cherry and cassis, hints of black olive, toasty oak, and dark chocolate. The palate is dense and rich with concentrated dark fruits and finishes with silky tannins and fresh, vibrant acidity.
