Profile
Wellington Cellars
If you’re looking for a wine country gem, look no further than Wellington Cellars in Glen Ellen, Sonoma County. This family-owned and operated winery has been producing award-winning wines from 100+-year-old vines in the Sonoma Valley and is considered one of the premier producers in the region. With a focus on small-lot production, Wellington Cellars takes great care to craft high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of Sonoma County.
Wellington Cellars Story
In 2014, the Belmonte’s purchased Wellington Vineyards, in operation for more than 20 years, by father and son John and Peter Wellington. This former family’s winery was known for estate wines produced from over 100-year-old vines and distribution across the US. The Belmonte’s also own VJB Cellars in Sonoma, where a [2-for-1 Tasting is offered … walk-ins welcome].
Sonoma Valley
Sonoma Valley is known for its diverse terroir, making it an ideal place for growing a variety of grape varietals. This gives winemakers plenty of options when crafting their wines. In addition, the valley’s climate is perfect for ripening grapes, with long, warm days and cool nights. Enjoy local, hand-crafted wines and champagnes throughout the area.
Wellington Cellars Tasting Room
Wellington Cellars is located in Glen Ellen, California – just a few miles from Sonoma Valley. The tasting room features views of the vineyards and offers wine tastings daily. You can also purchase wines by bottle or case to take home.
The Wellington Cellars winery and new tasting room are situated in the heart of Sonoma Valley amongst vineyards planted with a wide variety of grapes, including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, well as old-vine Zinfandel dating back to 1882.
New construction began in 2017 and included a new barrel room and the renovation of the existing Glen Ellen facilities and the original open-air barn.
Creating Fine Wines
Henry and Vittorio Belmonte quickly set out to re-brand, change the style of wines, and scale down production. As a result, the newly re-branded Wellington Cellars was born in late 2014 with small-lot wines, many presented in a hand-crafted bottle and produced almost exclusively from the 24-acre Estate.
Estate Wines Produced
Wellington Cellars produces estate wines from its 24 acres of vines in the heart of Sonoma Valley. The winery is also home to an olive orchard, a fruit orchard, and a bocce court.
Small Lot Focus
The focus on small-lot production gives the wine team complete control over all aspects of viticulture and vinification. “We want to make wine that tastes like where it comes from. We’re not chasing medals. We want to make wine that people will love and drink daily,” says co-owner Vittorio Belmonte.
Wellington Cellars Sonoma
The team at Wellington Cellars takes advantage of the Sonoma Valley terroir by growing a variety of grape varietals, including Pinot Noir, Malbec, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Sirah, Merlot, Grenache, Chardonnay, Viognier, and Sauvignon Blanc.
The Estate makes a White Rhone Blend and a Bordeaux Blend with all hand-crafted wines produced.
Dessert Wines
Welling Cellars also produces dessert wines from its grapes as Estate Zinfandel Port and Estate Late Harvest Chardonnay.
The Future
With a focus on small-lot production and a commitment to making wine that reflects the unique terroir of Sonoma County, Wellington Cellars is quickly becoming one of the premier producers in the region. Please stop by their new tasting room and experience the wines for yourself. You won’t be disappointed!
The Belmonte’s will carry on the tradition of Family-owned and operated, with limited production and estate wines. They will produce approximately 3,500 cases of French-Bordeaux wines annually, sold directly to the consumer and their wine club. In addition, the new property will allow them to educate guests in the vineyards and share their passion for wine where it all begins.
Wine Club
The Wine Club is highly allocated with shipments hand-selected by Henry & Vittorio.
